“It is not uncommon for a healthy fox to be out between dawn and dusk,” the department notes. “And a fox with mange does not necessarily have rabies.”
Still, authorities say it's best to keep your distance from any wild animal.
According to Wildlife.org, an interstate environmental coalition supported by the Pennsylvania Game Commission, red foxes are mainly active during dawn and dusk hours though commonly forage during the day as well, especially during the breeding season.
Red foxes are typically afraid of humans unless they have been habituated or are sick, experts say.
They are unlikely to pursue an adult cat or dog, though younger pets can be seen as prey. All pets should be kept in a fenced-in area and kittens should stay indoors.
